Nice.

On a similar, yet unrelated note, I have just started my own webcomic.

http://freespace.virgin.net/b.wakeling/Beer/Beer.html

It's called BeerMonster, and although at the moment it's only got one
issue and a pretty poor joke, it will improve.

I loved the pictures in your webcomic Brian - but I just didn't get the
joke, you're right it's pretty poor.

I loved Jesscat's little Comic-Strip of TCOM in the fanart section of

Oh good, glad someone liked it. As it's only been up a little over 14
hours, and only has the one badly-drawn joke, I wasn't expecting very
much in the way of feedback. You may have noticed I can't draw.

Anyway, now I feel rather anxious about getting next week's update
done to the same (or preferably higher) standard.

And:

I used the blue because I needed a background on which yellow text is
visible[1]. I'd prefer not to duplicate background colours on my site
(as an aid to navigation), and all the other good ones are mostly
taken. If you have any suggestions for a suitable background colour
that I haven't used eslewhere on my site, I'd be glad to hear it
(submissions accepted via EMail, here, or via the site's contact page,
in RGB format, either decimal or hexidecimal notation).

BTW, what does everybody think of my attempt at octarine on the DW
pages?

[1] and because I know blue and yellow is an accepted colour scheme
from the days of school BBC Micros running interword (I think it was)
and the like. And also, technically, my Amstrad CPC464, which I had a
green monitor for, so I never actually got to see blue.

I think this joke may have something to do with Gustav getting his facts
mixed up with his fiction - if I'm wrong again, somebody, preferably
Brian, please explain it to me!

Kinda. As I understand it the joke is that Gustav is
complaining about the stereotyped portrayal of Germans as
villains in films. However, as the film they are watching is a
World War II story, the film-makers were largely constrained
by the facts of the matter.

Personally, I wouldn't use background colour to distinguish sections:
finding a single distinctive, yet nice looking scheme is hard enough.

There's better ways to assist people in navigating. Breadcrumbs are one
way, although the research suggests that many people ignore them.
Breadcrumbs look like: "Disorderfeed -> Recipes -> Vegetarian Spaghetti"
(although I don't actually use this).

Of course, it's your site so you can do what you like with it ;)

Thanks Dave, I thought this was it - but it just seemed too simple, too

Seven weeks so far, and no sign of running out of material - which is

Hi Brian, I've been waiting for a follow up crappy Beer Monster joke to
your first one, and keep going back to your homepage to have a look for
it, but I just can't find anything. Has the second one been uploaded yet?
If not, can you give me a specific date when it'll come out so I'll stop
going back to your homepage to look for it.

The BeerMonster webcomic is at
http://freespace.virgin.net/b.wakeling/Beer/Beer.html

It is now in week 7, updating every Sunday just before midnight. The
follow-up joke to the joke in week one is this week, and there are
five other different jokes available for your viewing pleasure.

Hi Brian, I've been clicking on the arrows for ages, but I just keep
getting the first joke, or the cast - isn't anybody else getting this
problem, or is it something wrong on my end perhaps?

Well, once I start talking, nobody else gets a word in edgways! I can talk
more non-stop crap than your crap beer monster, so I'll give hubby a rest
for a while, by picking on somebody else to torture for a couple of hours
- you'll feel like you're in hell anyway! :-)

It's strange, I could get through to Brian's homepage, and the first
Beer Monster cartoon, but the arrows wouldn't budge after that. I tried to
get through on Firefox, Opera, and Konquerer, and even Lynx, to any of
Brian's other web-comics, but the arrows wouldn't budge for me - I don't
use Windows, or Internet Explorer, but I'm using a Linux system, so maybe,
that's what the problem is.

I'm assuming you have JavaScript enabled, right?

If you do, and you're still not getting the newer ones, I'll have to
think of the best way to implement an archive page - which will
probably look a bit silly until I get about 20 entries on it.

That's not the problem. That's the solution.

That's probably a bad assumption. A lot of people disable JavaScript.

To the best of my recollection, on both the sites I manage, there have
only been half a dozen people with JavaScript disabled. As they have a
combined lifetime hit total of over 15,000, I think it's a fairly safe
assumption that visitors have JS enabled.

I'd have expected more like 1,500 of those 15,000 to have JS disabled.

Perhaps Sturgeon's Law needs updating.

General rule of thumb: It's usually best to assume as many as 10% of all
potential visitors do not have js enabled for one reason or another.

Not really. All you can assume, if you have been relying on javascript,
is that most of those hits were probably requests from js-enabled
browsers. What you can't estimate is how many people abandoned the
site(s) after just 1 page because, from their, non-javascript
perspective - it appeared to be broken.

It can tell me what system and browser each visitor is running, where
they are in the world, how long they stayed on each page, which pages
they viewed, and where they came from and went to - but only if they
have JS enabled. If JS is disabled, it records that someone has
visited a page tagged for counting and nothing more. It can
differentiate between return visits and multiple page-views per visit
as well.

In general, I only use JS for mouseovers, and "go forward/back a page"
buttons. That's it - just the most basic bell with very little
whistle. This is partly because I code in notepad and a load of
excessive punctuation and extended word strings look out of place, and
partly because I can't be arsed to learn more than the basics.

I only use a JS slideshow script for BeerMonster to save space - I
only have 10MB of webspace available, and I'm up to something like 6.5
already. I want to be able to do a decent run of BeerMonster, and keep
all the other areas of my site up to date for the forseeable future
and beyond, so doing a new page for each issue is not only
time-consuming it's space-consuming as well. Even when each image
averages about 25kB, a cumulative run of seperate pages and constantly
updated index would soon drive down my available space. The way I do
it, I only need to add a new line to the description field every week,
and change the numbers of the latest slide and slide to be displayed
first.

Then you don't know, cause other things influence external counters,
including (but not limited to) combinations of:

Blocking of 3rd party images
Blocking of 3rd party javascript
Blocking of 3rd party cookies
Blocking of all cookies
Keyword blocking image (like URIs containing "counter\.")
Keyword blocking cookies
Keyword blocking javascript
Cookie randomizers
Load balancing proxy servers

The combination of all of the above makes the total uncertainty QUITE high.
If I were to visit your web site, for example, I would appear as two
different visitors to your web log, and not appear at all to the external
counter.

That's probably how you might have known that you were right all the time
Brian - I have got Java Script installed - and on every single browser I
tried to get on to your other web-comics.

It makes no difference though, I still couldn't get through. Hubby thinks
that you may be using an older code, in comparison with the much newer,
updated code we're using?

As it happens, most of those are one, fairly small in the grand scheme
of things, collection of people. They range on a sliding scale of people
who are overly paranoid to people who are too stupid to know what
they're doing so they turn off all the check boxes to make things
"safer".

> Load balancing proxy servers

This, however, is a large portion of UK net surfers.

(Javascript is not automatically evil, and can be used to enhance your
use of the site. The trick, however, is to make the site work first
_without_ CSS, Javascript, AJAX, Flash and whatever, and then to add
them where it makes life _easier_.

If you have a site which _requires_ Javascript, you'd better have a damn
good reason.)
